Chapter 8
The motor of the black Cadillac purred softly and peacefully in the background while Eddie Capo, his mouth still swollen, stared at me over the top of his gun. I stared back at him, wondering whether to try my luck then or later. Under my breath, I was cursing myself for having been careless enough to let him slip up on me. I hadnât been expecting him to move so quickly, but that was no excuse.
âYou want to argue about it, sucker?â he asked. âIâd like nothing better. But the boss says to bring you to see him and no shooting. Only if you want to argue, the boss canât say Iâm wrong.â
I looked at him, weighing his words. He was probably telling the truth. Otherwise he would have started shooting before I even looked around. Men like Eddie Capo never make the mistake of giving anyone an even break.
âYou getting in, sucker,â Eddie asked, âor you want to try to be a big man?â
âIâm getting in,â I said. âWhy not? I know you wouldnât shoot me unless my back was turned.â I climbed into the seat beside him and closed the door.
âKeep it up, chum,â he said. âYou donât worry me. Sooner or later, the boss is going to say go ahead and itâs going to be a pleasure to take you. Now, just hold it.â
He reached over with his left hand and patted my coat. Then he reached in and snaked my gun out of its holster. He put it in his pocket on the far side from me.
âMaybe youâll get it back,â he said. âJust sit nice and quiet and you wonât get hurt.â He slipped his own gun back into its holster and started the car.
We drove through winding streets, cutting around corners so that I had no idea where we were going. Finally he cut into a driveway leading to a huge white house with giant pillars in front of it. Sitting well back from the street, surrounded by huge trees it looked like something out of the feudal past. Eddie drove the car around in back of the house and stopped.
âYou the joker who told the cops to put a tail on me?â he asked as he turned off the motor.
âNo,â I said. âI knew they had put one on you though.â
âI shook him,â he said contemptuously. âCops. They never saw the day they could tail Eddie Capo.â
âI am the joker, however,â I said, âwho told the cops not to pull you in for questioning. I told them I wanted to handle you myself. Youâre beginning to get in my hair, Eddie. Every time I turn around I see you. Iâm getting tired of it.â
âItâs going to be a pleasure,â he repeated. âI owe you something for this afternoon. Get out, chum.â
I opened the door and got out. Eddie slid out after me, his hand close to his gun. He motioned me in through the back door. I went. We were in a long hall leading up to what was obviously the front door.
